Charity to Offer New Sailing and Watersports Opportunities for All in Portsmouth

Today marks the official opening of the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre on the Eastern Road in Portsmouth by Cllr Linda Symes and Iain Percy OBE. The world-class watersports centre operation is a partnership between the Andrew Simpson Foundation : The Sailing Charity and Portsmouth City Council aimed at providing opportunities for all to enjoy the benefits of getting on the water.

Through its seven community sailing programmes, the Foundation aims to offer the community of Portsmouth affordable opportunities to learn to sail and experience watersports and outdoor adventure activities, as well as offer inclusive routes to regular participation.

Additionally, Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre – Portsmouth offers top class courses and training to beginners and experts alike and aims to provide a pathway for future sailing stars to develop and follow in the footsteps of Foundation Trustee Sir Ben Ainslie.

Cllr Linda Symes, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: “It’s great to celebrate the official opening of the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre and to look ahead to what will be on offer here for the local community. The centre will provide opportunities for local children to get out on the water and to experience a range of water sports activities from sailing to paddleboarding.”

Iain Percy OBE, double Olympic Gold medallist and life-long friend and sailing partner of Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson’ added ‘Bart was passionate about ensuring sailing, the sport that he loved, was fully accessible to all. I know that he will be looking down today smiling, knowing that through the new centre in Portsmouth everyone will have the chance to participate, learn and develop as individuals.
